Record Massive Black Holes Discovered Lurking in Monster Galaxies

University of California, Berkeley, astronomers have discovered the largest black holes to date ‑- two monsters with masses equivalent to 10 billion suns that are threatening to consume anything, even light, within a region five times the size of our solar system.
These black holes are at the centers of two galaxies more than 300 million light years from Earth, and may be the dark remnants of some of the very bright galaxies, called quasars, that populated the early universe.
"In the early universe, there were lots of quasars or active galactic nuclei, and some were expected to be powered by black holes as big as 10 billion solar masses or more," said Chung-Pei Ma, UC Berkeley professor of astronomy. "These two new supermassive black holes are similar in mass to young quasars, and may be the missing link between quasars and the supermassive black holes we see today."
Black holes are dense concentrations of matter that produce such strong gravitational fields that even light cannot escape. While exploding stars, called supernovas, can leave behind black holes the mass of a single star like the sun, supermassive black holes have presumably grown from the merger of other black holes or by capturing huge numbers of stars and massive amounts of gas.
"These black holes may shed light on how black holes and their surrounding galaxies have nurtured each other since the early universe," said UC Berkeley graduate student Nicholas McConnell, first author of a paper on the discovery being published in the Dec. 8 issue of the British journal Nature by McConnell, Ma and their colleagues at the university of Toronto, Texas and Michigan, as well as by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Arizona.
To date, approximately 63 supermassive black holes have been found sitting in the cores of nearby galaxies. The largest for more than three decades was a 6.3 billion solar mass black hole in the center of the nearby galaxy M87.
One of the newly discovered black holes is 9.7 billion solar masses and located in the elliptical galaxy NGC 3842, the brightest galaxy in the Leo cluster of galaxies, 320 million light years away in the direction of the constellation Leo. The second is as large or larger and sits in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4889, the brightest galaxy in the Coma cluster about 336 million light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Coma Berenices.
According to McConnell, these black holes have an event horizon -- the "abandon all hope" edge from which not even light can escape -- that is 200 times the orbit of Earth, or five times the orbit of Pluto. Beyond the event horizon, each black hole has a gravitational influence that would extend over a sphere 4,000 light years across.
"For comparison, these black holes are 2,500 times as massive as the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, whose event horizon is one fifth the orbit of Mercury," McConnell said.
The brightest galaxy in a cluster
These 10 billion solar mass black holes have remained hidden until now, presumably because they are living in quiet retirement, Ma said. During their active quasar days some 10 billion years ago, they cleared out the neighborhood by swallowing vast quantities of gas and dust. The surviving gas became stars that have since orbited peacefully. According to Ma, these monster black holes, and their equally monster galaxies that likely contain a trillion stars, settled into obscurity at the center of galaxy clusters.
Ma, a theoretical astrophysicist, decided to look for these huge black holes in relatively nearby clusters of elliptical galaxies as a result of her computer simulations of galaxy mergers.
Astronomers believe that many, if not all, galaxies have a massive black hole at the center, with the larger galaxies harboring larger black holes. The largest black holes are found in elliptical galaxies, which are thought to result from the merger of two spiral galaxies. Ma found, however, that mergers of elliptical galaxies themselves could produce the largest elliptical galaxies as well as supermassive black holes approaching 10 billion solar masses. These black holes can grow even larger by consuming gas left over from a merger.
"Multiple mergers are one way to build up these behemoths," Ma said.
To look for these monster black holes, Ma teamed up with observational astronomers, including James Graham, a professor of astronomy at UC Berkeley and the University of Toronto, and Karl Gebhardt, a professor of astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin. Gebhardt had obtained the mass of the previous record holder in galaxy M87.
Using telescopes at the Gemini and Keck observatories in Hawaii and at McDonald Observatory in Texas, McConnell and Ma obtained detailed spectra of the diffuse starlight at the centers of several massive elliptical galaxies, each the brightest galaxy in its cluster. So far, they've analyzed the orbital velocities of stars in two galaxies and calculated the central masses to be in the quasar range. Having such huge masses contained within a volume only a few hundred light years across led the astronomers to conclude that the masses were massive black holes.
"If all that mass were in stars, then we would see their light," Ma said.
Modeling these massive galaxies required use of state-of-the-art supercomputers at the Texas Advanced Computing Center.
"For an astronomer, finding these insatiable black holes is like finally encountering people nine feet tall, whose great height had only been inferred from fossilized bones. How did they grow so large?" Ma said. "This rare find will help us understand whether these black holes had very tall parents or ate a lot of spinach."
Other coauthors of the Nature paper are Hubble postdoctoral fellow Shelley A. Wright at UC Berkeley and graduate student Jeremy D. Murphy of the University of Texas; Tod R. Lauer of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory; and Douglas O. Richstone of the University of Michigan.
The research was supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and UC Berkeley's Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science.

IGNITE 2011 Awards .....

National Innovation Foundation (NIF) organized the IGNITE-11 award function on November11,2011 at RJMCEI auditorium, IIM, Ahmedabad. Former President of India Bharat Ratna Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam conferred the awards to the winners. IGNITE 11 is the National Competition for students' technological ideas and innovation organised in partnership with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Navodaya Vidyala Samiti, Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) and others. The idea to organise such a competition is to bring out the hidden creativity in the children and make them think beyond their text books.
The contest, which ran from Oct 16, 2010 to September 10, 2011, saw participation of students from 25 states of the country. Over all 4104 entries were received, which ranged from sectors like energy, environment, transport, general household utility items and many even discussed societal problems. The award winners were announced on October 15th , the birth day of children's favorite Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, celebrated as the Children's Innovation Day by NIF.

Come on,Stand with ANNA

Anna Hazare is now not a name, its a movement for India. What the government doing is utterly shameful act. Students of history can hardly remember any such 22 point conditions list at the time of british rule; for any fast or agitation. This is gimmick of govt just in "office-office" (a famous hindi serial with this name) style. It is a little bit impossible to say that if some other govt would be there, then the reaction will be different. As this is a system and Mr. Anna is challenging the system. You can challenge the govt, political parties, persons but you cannot challenge the system in this great country called India. As the corrupts presents in the system will try till there last breath to save the corrupt system.
One thing I always want to request to the countrymen during this whole movement (Jan Lokpal Bill); that please try to be honest from inside first then only ANY change will be possible.
Without any moral force we can't fight for long. if You are really supporting this movement then please don't give or take bribe. Start the cleaning process from inside first.
Believe me everything is Possible..!!

BIO OR MATHS,...OR BOTH...I AM TOO CONFUSED

Its peak time for admissions in new classes. In most of schools admissions process is almost completed. But our "Generation Y" is totally confused. And their coaching teachers are increasing there confusion. One thing i never understand why parents not encourage their kids to follow their own minds, why they don't develop self confidence in them.
Dear friends, make one thing clear Knowledge is something else and taking a subject in your 11th class and scoring good marks in that  subject is another. So why you are confused so much with taking subject and gaining knowledge. For success in life you need a clear vision for your self.
Before taking any decision for choosing subjects in 11th; please put some Questions before you.
Q.1.    What you want to be ....?

Q.2.     Why you want to be "........"?(doctor, engineer, scientist, banker, businessmen, software engineer, etc. list is too long)

Q.3.      Is it your dream or some one has inspired you..? Is this inspiration is a forced one..?

Q.4.     What subjects you really like..?

Q.5.     Do you know well what is the real career prospect in your favorite subjects..?

Q.6.     How many career opportunity you know..? Just name them..

Q.7.     What is the difference between a Career and a Profession.....?

Q.8.     What is the meaning of success for you..? Money....Name....Fame...Job Satisfaction.....or something else...?
There are many more questions, but start with this ones and you will start finding your desired answers. If you don't find answers then start a discussion on this forum.

I will write next time on "strategy for first success step"

SAVE WATER.....I support Tilak Holi...

It is now much talked about that next world war will be fought for WATER. This is due to scarcity of soft/sweet water on earth. One can amazed by the fact that if we mess up the whole earth and make a ball of it, then the whole earth; the solid part of it will cover by hundreds of meters high level of water around it. The only problem with earth is of sweet water. When we talk about INDIA it is one of the countries which has highest number of sweet water rivers. And the second fact about our country is we waste most of it just for the cause of wasting. One such wasting occasion is HOLI. In this festival we throw gallons of water after making it poisonous by adding colour to it.

In recent times Bhaskar group of news paper has started Tilak HOli movement. This is a praiseworthy task done by them. I support them immensely. And all my dear and near ones, supporters of our science movement & my CSCAGIM members I appeal all of you don't waste a single drop of water. Play holi with dry colours and save water. It will help the planet and thus we can be able to be real ignited minds.

MY LITTLE FRIENDS HAD WRITTEN SOMETHING..........

When I instigated too much to my little friends to write something on science and their experience what they had written check it out. UNEDITED VERSION

Our world of science

Nowadays we are completely surrounded by new technologies which help us to live comfortably, which were discovered by science. The basic thing of science is that it does not believe in wrong believes. Science believes that wrong believes are just coincidence. And it’s a rumor that wrong believes are true. Coincidence is believed by science, but coincidence is opposed by common people. Mostly Indians believe in wrong believes.
As every coin has two faces Science has also two faces one advantage another is disadvantage. Some are mentioned below:-
ADVANTAGES
Because of many science experiments and inventions we are living a perfect life.
Science helps us to understand our environment better.
It also helps us to organize our daily activities.
DISADVANTAGES
We’ll be too dependant on it. And when the technology fails we are helpless.
Sometimes it affects our health and lifestyles.
It destroys our simple and healthy life.
Technologies are used in wars also. And more weapons are also created.

Science is studied by students in schools. It also gives a perfect knowledge about science to the students. Science is the best thing to understand environment and our universe.

Many great leaders have also said about science one of the leader is Jawaharlal Nehru he said,”the basic thing that science should do is to teach us to think straight to act straight and not be afraid of discarding anything or of accepting anything provided there are sufficient reasons for doing so”.

And at last we RASHI and NIKHITA are reminding that we should use the technology not to misuse it……!!!!

Here they end their article but left many questions. I will discuss them some time later.

START WRITING YOUR EXPERIENCES....with yourself....

Many fans of our science club are facing problems, in how to join the club or how to participate in this movement. As now I have less time, they have to do all with themselves. Dear Rashi and Nikita you are not the only people want to join, there are many more. But one basic tendency of ours is we are either lazy or our enthusiasm gone off after some time, when we start some task to perform.
The problem lies within ourselves; and the problem is how to do..?   What to do...?  and whose HELP can solve the problem...?

When we have the problem we start searching for the rescuer ...a ...super Hero type person who can solve our problem. Now a days this is internet.. which is the only answer for any thing.

Friends please think for one second... when there was no internet at that time more inventions and basic discoveries had done. But now we have, at large, almost every powerful technology to help us. but still we are nowhere...!!
There are many problems still alive before humanity and this world. Only with a scientific approach we can understand the problem and try to solve it.
It is in your childhood only when you can practice to think and work for solutions rather than ..worry and ..trapped in problems.

Use your holidays and free time to think free of your own fanciful thoughts about anything.....about something...... & if possible please write down your amazing thoughts either on paper or type it on computer. This can be your personal diary ... but .. you can share this with the world.. and very soon you will find some friends who really worth you.

Always remember when you are in lower classes you have much time to develop your mind positively... but in higher classes you have less free time.
As you all know a day has only 24 Hours on earth. According to our time calculation mechanism...and you always have these 24 Hours in a day and 365 days and 6 hours in a year...

So please think on it ....& not only think Just do it NOW....

We will have our own TELESCOPE

We have always dreamed about our own Telescope. if everything goes according to our plan then very soon we will have our own telescope. then our junior scientists will explore the depths of great mother universe. and we would be able to experience truly whether there any old women is at uncle moon or any wolf is there. Now-a-days many people are looking Sai Baba's image in moon's face.
So dear little Galileoes Be ready for ADVENTURE ahead...!!!!!!!!!
